Austin and the places around are famous for swimming through out the
year since the paces are warm all year round. The swimmers, toe tippers,
sunbathers and bathers are attracted to the natural spots and the semi
natural spots which are found abundantly over here. Numerous swimming
pools and other areas with abundant wanted suitable for swimming are available
but since there is no lifeguard one has to take care. The list of them
and the timings can be got from Recreation department’s Aquatics Division
and Austin Park. Those who know swimming can go for the purpose of fitness
in the Stacy Pool lanes and Barton Springs pool. There are six municipal
pools and 27 pools near by which can be contacted through phone to know
the timings. Eleven pools conduct swimming lessons and about 5000 children
benefited in 1994.
Barton Springs Pool found in Zilker Park near Barton Spring Road is one of the famous swimming pools. The pool has natural gravel and rock bottom, spring fed with about 90-0 feet long. A moderate temperature of about 68 degrees F is maintained with the temperature varying from one part of the pool to the other and so it is difficult to get a refreshing feeling after swimming. But still many visit the pool during weekends. The pool will be closed if the rainfall is heavy since the fecal coliform count is higher in that time. It is better to visit the pool after confirming through phone whether the pool is open or not. Telephone calls are answered throughout the day and also in the night.
The fees are nominal three dollars for adults, two dollars for juniors at the age of 12 to 17 and one dollar for children below 12 and senior citizens. The fee applies between 9 AM and 9 PM. On special events day, holidays and weekends a parking fee of three dollars is collected to park the car in Zilker Park. The pool is closed on Thursdays between 9 AM and 7 PM in order to maintain and clean the pool to keep it in good condition. The other days the pool door is opened from morning 5 AM.
One can reach the pool by driving along Barton Springs Road from Lamar Boulevard westward till you reach the Robert E Lee Drive From there one can go left to reach Robert E Lee and climb up the hill for one fourth of a mile and then reach the parking area laid with gravel after just passing a baseball field. There one can have fun swimming and enjoying the sun. Everybody enjoys hot summer taking bath in the pool
