Origin Of The Bishop’s Palace

Bishop school, bishop allen, bishop williamson, anne bishop

Bishop’s palace possesses high spirit for the lost Victorian architecture. Architect Nicholas J. Clayton of Galveston took a courageous step to modulate the front elevation of many churches and various business buildings of that period. The house was constructed for Walter Gresham, a famous lawyer, Representative to the 53rd Congress and Texas legislator. In 1841 Gresham was born in the country of King and Queen that is Virginia, in the family of famous lawyer and cultivator. In the civil war he worked as a confidential in the Army of Northern Virginia. He completed his graduation in the University of Virginia. And in the year 1863 he completed law and took part in the bar. As his family wealth was lost in the war he transferred to Texas and went to Galveston. In 1872 he was selected as the District Attorney and he involved in the railroad business.

The Catholic Church bought the Gresham House and the mansion became the Bishop’s Palace.
